Operant is technical software for developers, researchers and advanced users that provides local network inspection, automation and media transcoding capabilities. By building, installing or using the extension and its satellite components you accept these terms in full.

1. Acceptance and scope

These terms govern the use of the Operant browser extension, its native messaging host and its accompanying scripts and documentation, collectively “the software”. If you do not agree with any part of them, do not install or use the software.

2. Definitions

  • Extension — the Manifest V3 browser package and its user interface.
  • Native host — the Python process that communicates with the extension over stdio.
  • Tools — the external utilities the host invokes, namely ffmpeg and yt-dlp.
  • Content — any media, page or data you point the software at.

3. License

The original source code is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later (GPL-3.0-or-later): you are free to use, study, modify and redistribute the software, provided that any derivative work is licensed under the same terms and accompanied by its corresponding source code. The warranty disclaimer below forms part of that license.

4. Third-party components

The software orchestrates independent external utilities through process calls; they are not bundled with the source tree and are downloaded, at your request, from their official repositories. Each is subject to its own license:

  • FFmpeg — GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) or GNU General Public License (GPL), depending on the build.
  • yt-dlp — The Unlicense (public domain).
  • JSZip — MIT License.

Operant claims no ownership over these tools and is not affiliated with their maintainers.

5. Acceptable use

You are solely responsible for the use you make of the download, extraction and scraping capabilities of the software. In particular:

  • Copyright — do not download, duplicate or redistribute content protected by intellectual property rights without authorization from its holders or an applicable legal exception (such as private copying).
  • Site terms — comply with the terms of service, acceptable use policies and robots.txt directives of the sites you run the software against.
  • No DRM circumvention — the software contains no mechanisms to break digital rights management systems (Widevine, FairPlay, PlayReady or others). Captured streams are limited to public, unencrypted media.

6. Prohibited use

You may not use the software to: violate applicable law; overload or abuse websites or services; infringe third-party rights; redistribute the Tools in violation of their licenses; or remove, obscure or alter any copyright or attribution notices included in the software.

7. Privacy

The software performs all processing locally and transmits no telemetry. The handling of page data, permissions and local storage is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

8. Availability and modifications

The software is provided as open source without availability commitments. You are free to build it from source at any specific revision. The project may add, change or discontinue features at any time; pinned releases are the recommended way to guarantee a stable configuration.

9. No warranty

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED “AS IS”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE SOFTWARE IS WITH YOU.

10. Limitation of liability

In no event shall the authors or copyright holders be liable for any claim, damages or other liability — whether in contract, tort or otherwise — arising from, out of or in connection with the software or its use. This includes, without limitation, data loss, claims of copyright infringement arising from content you download, or actions taken against you by third-party websites.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the authors and copyright holders against any claims, damages and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the software or your breach of these terms.

12. Termination

The licenses granted here are perpetual under the GPL-3.0-or-later license, but terminate automatically if you breach these terms. Upon termination you must cease using the software and delete your copies.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law applicable at the place of establishment of the authors, without prejudice to any mandatory consumer protection rules of your own jurisdiction.

14. Severability

If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, the remaining provisions stay in full force and the affected provision is replaced by an enforceable one that reflects the original intent as closely as possible.

15. Changes to these terms

Material changes will be reflected in the update date shown at the top of this page. Continued use of the software after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
